What an AI Server Rack Does Differently

An AI server rack is designed around the physical realities of AI and GPU hardware. These systems are typically larger, heavier, and generate more heat than traditional servers, which changes what the rack itself must support.

AI deployments commonly use large GPU servers with multiple accelerator cards, oversized power supplies, and high airflow requirements. To safely support this equipment, an AI rack must handle high equipment weight, deep server chassis, dense power and cabling, and more aggressive cooling, while still allowing room for future upgrades.

Because of these demands, AI racks are built with reinforced frames, greater usable depth, clear airflow paths, and additional rear clearance. This ensures the rack can remain fully populated without restricting cooling, service access, or long-term reliability.

Power, Cooling, and Clearance Considerations

AI servers draw significantly more power per chassis and produce substantially more heat than traditional compute equipment. An AI rack must allow space for larger PDUs, thicker power cables, and multiple power connections per server, along with sufficient rear clearance for routing and maintenance.

Cooling is a primary design consideration. AI racks are typically deployed with high-airflow air cooling today and must allow for future cooling changes, including rear-door heat exchangers or liquid cooling components. Designing for this flexibility upfront reduces the risk of having to replace the cabinet later.

Space, Weight, and Structural Design

AI racks are not simply taller versions of standard racks. They require greater internal depth, stronger mounting rails, and a structure capable of supporting very high static loads when fully populated.
